Three Council Candidates Asked to Answer Ward 7 Questions
The following invitation was emailed to the three candidates running for election as Ward 7 City Councilor.
During the appointment process, candidates Janet Ayres and Barbie Walker provided responses to a series of questions from Ward 7 voters. Candidate Lyndsie Leech declined.

All candidates have now been invited to provide new, additional, and/or revised answers. Following the April 12th deadline, the candidates’ responses will be announced here.

Campaign begins for Ward 7 City Councilor
The filing period has closed and there are three candidates running:
Janet Ayres
Barbie Walker
Lyndsie Leech
The election will be by mail-in ballots and end on May 16, 2023.
If one candidate gets at least 50% plus 1 vote, she will be elected. Otherwise, the two candidates with the highest number of votes will go to a runoff election November,

Vote counts for Ward 7 appointment
The votes were in this sequence:
- Lyndsie Leech : 3 For (Keating, Zelenka, Yeh) | 4 Against (Groves, Evans, Clark, Semple)
- Thomas Hiura : 2 For | 5 Against
- Barbie Walker : 2 For | 5 Against
- Lyndsie Leech : 5 For (Groves, Evans, Keating, Zelenka, Yeh)| 2 Against ( Clark, Semple)
Ward 6 Councilor Greg Evans nominated Lyndsie Leech and voted for her. The other councilors voting for Leech were:
- Matt Keating (Ward 2)
- Randy Groves (Ward 6)
- Alan Zelenka (Ward 3)
- Jennifer Yeh (Ward 4)
Council appoints Lyndsie Leech
Reportedly, the Eugene City Council appointed Lyndsie Leech as the Interim Ward 7 City Councilor. Details to follow.
Council deadlocks — voting again today
The City Council failed to appoint an Interim Ward 7 City Councilor at Monday’s work session. Click here for coverage by The Register-Guard.
Here were the votes:
- Barbie Walker: 3 yes votes to 4 no votes (same result in two rounds)
- Lyndsie Leech: 3-4 (same results in two rounds)
- Thomas Hiura: 2-5
- Carol Zorn: 3-4
- Janet Ayres: 2-5
- Daniel Isaacson: 3-4

Applicants’ council interviews posted online
The seven city councilors interviewed five applicants the evening of Monday, December 5th. Each interview lasted 30 minutes and had the same seven questions presented. Each interview began with the applicant’s opening statement. Even if you don’t watch 2-1/2 hours of interviews, you can gain useful insight from viewing the few minutes of each opening statement.

Note: Applicants Lyndsie Leech and Carol Zorn have not answered any of the seven questions from the Steering Committee. Lyndsie Leech has advised the Steering Committee that she declines to respond to any questions. Carol Zorn has not responded to the Steering Committee request for an explanation for not engaging Ward 7 voters through the opportunities provided by Ward 7 Neighbors United.

The Steering Committee sent the following message to the seven city councilors who will appoint the Interim Ward 7 City Councilor.

Dear Mayor and City Councilors,
During the ongoing application and appointment process, Ward 7 Neighbors United provided multiple invitations for applicants to engage with Ward 7 voters.
Consistent with the goals of Ward 7 Neighbors United, we believe each applicant’s response (or lack of response) in the three regards listed below provide applicants’ actions, as well as their words, that city councilors should consider in deciding which applicant would best engage and effectively represent Ward 7 voters.
Here is the summary of applicants’ engagement via the opportunities provided by Ward 7 Neighbors United:
