Oct. 5th: Work session on appointing Ward 7 Councilor

On Wednesday, October 5th, the City Council will discuss the process to appoint an interim Ward 7 City Councilor to fill the vacancy that resulted from the recall of Claire Syrett. Click here to review the agenda.

The staff have enumerated three alternative motions for councilors to consider:

1. Move to approve the interim appointment plan as presented in the attachments.
2. Move to approve the interim appointment plan as presented in the attachments, with the CC Agenda October 5, 2022 Special Meeting – Item 1 following changes: ________________
3. Move to appoint __________________ as interim councilor for Ward 7.

An alternative motion would be:
4. Move to approve the interim appointment plan as presented in the attachments, with the CC Agenda October 5, 2022 Special Meeting – Item 1 changes to be considered by the City Council at its work session on October 12, 2022.

This motion would still allow the public announcement of the process to occur on October 6th and applications to be due on November 9th. The only change would be that the application questions could be revised and the application available on October 13th.

This approach would allow not only councilors to consider important questions for applicants, but also allow a brief period for Ward 7 voters to suggest questions.

ADDENDUM: Although Ward 1 City Councilor, Emily Semple, recommended allowing one week for Ward 7 voters to suggest application questions, none of the other city councilors supported this opportunity for voters’ input.
